This is the student speaking rubric of how each level is described. Tutors use this to give students their levels so that students and tutors can both track the progress of the students’ speech. In the trial session or first General Topic Speaking session the tutor will use this rubric to give the students their levels. They students will then be tested periodically to track their progress. Here are a few of the vocabulary definitions to help you better understand the levels:
intelligible: capable of being understood
accent: the pronunciation of certain sounds, letters, or words
intonation: rise and fall of voice in speech
distracting: unable to concentrate on original focus (in this case—meaning of sentence)
laborious: requiring lots of work
choppy: starts and stops suddenly
hesitancy: holding back
diction: choice of words
impedes: obstructs; hinders; prevents
